Chris Brown Pleads Not Guilty in London Assault Case: Trial Set for 2025
R&B superstar Chris Brown has officially pleaded not guilty to a serious assault charge related to an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub in 2023. The incident, described by prosecutors as an “unprovoked attack,” has sparked renewed scrutiny of the singer’s controversial legal history.
What Happened at Tape Nightclub?
The incident in question took place on February 19, 2023, at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, Central London. According to prosecutors, music producer Abraham Diaw was allegedly struck multiple times with a bottle and then reportedly punched and kicked in a separate area of the venue.
Chris Brown Appears in Southwark Crown Court
Appearing at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, June 20, 2025, Chris Brown, 36, pleaded “not guilty” to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also denied the same charge.
The courtroom was packed with spectators—many of them fans—who filled the public gallery during the high-profile appearance.
Additional Charges Still Pending
In addition to the main charge, Brown and Akinlolu are also accused of assault causing actual bodily harm. The court also noted that Brown is facing one count of carrying an offensive weapon—specifically, a glass bottle—during the incident.
No plea has yet been entered on those additional charges. The court has scheduled another hearing for July 11, 2025
Arrest and Conditional Bail
Chris Brown, widely known by his stage nickname Breezy, was arrested at Manchester’s Lowry Hotel on May 15, 2025. He was detained and later released from HMP Forest Bank in Salford on May 21.
To secure bail, Brown was ordered to pay a staggering £4 million ($5.4 million), with an additional £1 million due within a week. This bail condition serves as a financial guarantee to ensure his compliance and court return.
Brown’s Tour Continues Despite Legal Troubles
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Chris Brown has continued performing as part of his international tour. Just hours before his court appearance, he took the stage in Cardiff, drawing a massive crowd.
The five-to-seven-day trial has now been scheduled for October 2026, giving both legal teams over a year to prepare.
A History of Legal Controversy
This isn’t Chris Brown’s first brush with the law. The singer, who rose to fame in the mid-2000s, has faced multiple legal challenges throughout his career, most notably his 2009 conviction for assaulting fellow pop star Rihanna.
While Brown has worked hard to rehabilitate his image over the years, this London case once again places him under intense media and legal scrutiny.
What Happens Next?
Chris Brown is currently free under strict bail conditions. The next scheduled court date is July 11, 2025, where further proceedings will determine whether additional pleas are entered. All eyes will be on the October 2026 trial, which could mark a pivotal moment in the singer's ongoing legal saga.
